![]() ![]() Before returning to England, Thomas Paine lived in carious other places around Europe, including England and France. While in Philadelphia Paine became a journalist and essayist. Army and designed the Sunderland Bridge at Wearmouth, England in 1796 and the Schuylkill River Bridge at Philadelphia in 1787. His 47 page pamphlet sold 500,000 copies. In 1774 Paine immigrated to the British American Colonies, where he wrote his most famous work, Common Sense, a pamphlet in favor of America’s freedom. Not long after this he met Benjamin Franklin who suggested he move to America. He legally separated from Elizabeth on June 4. ![]() This was a short marriage, lasting only a few months. On Mahe remarried a woman named Elizabeth Olive. He picked himself up and moved to London to become a school teacher. Mary and her unborn child died, when she went into early labor. Soon after she became pregnant with their first child, his business collapsed.
